Hertsmere Borough Council’s Cabinet has taken another major step towards delivering a landmark cultural attraction for Borehamwood, approving £2 million in Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) funding to support the creation of the Elstree Film Studios Immersive Experience.

If approved by Full Council on 26 November, the new attraction will be council-owned and part of the Elstree Film Studios Centenary celebrations, marking over 100 years of world-renowned film and television production in Hertsmere.

But this isn’t just about looking back, it’s about creating an experience that can bring any story to life. From walking through the sets of EastEnders to standing in the middle of a historic scene like the Great Fire of London, or even taking part in the launch of a major new movie filmed right here in Borehamwood, the Immersive Experience will combine cutting-edge technology with creative storytelling.

There will also be strong links with local education, giving schoolchildren the chance to experience history, science, and the arts in completely new ways, bringing the classroom to life in a place built on imagination.

The project has attracted cross-party support throughout its development, seen as a true legacy piece that celebrates Elstree’s past while investing in the borough’s cultural and economic future.

🎥 Cllr Jeremy Newmark, Leader of Hertsmere Borough Council and Chair of Elstree Film Studios, said:

“Elstree Film Studios is recognised across the world, but this project makes sure the people of Borehamwood feel part of that story too.

The Immersive Experience will give us the power to tell any story, from iconic British TV to our own local heritage, in a way that inspires, educates and entertains. It’s both a tribute to our century of creativity and an investment in the next.”

🎞️ Cllr Chris Myers, Cabinet Member for Culture and Board Member at Elstree Film Studios, added:

“What’s so exciting about this is that it’s not a museum, it’s alive. The technology will let us create completely new experiences, whether it’s the story of EastEnders, Shakespeare on stage, or the latest blockbuster filmed right here.

It’s also a space for schools, families and visitors to learn through experience and it will generate income that’s reinvested straight back into local services. This really is something special for Borehamwood.”

If approved next month, the Elstree Film Studios Immersive Experience could be welcoming visitors by late 2026, putting Borehamwood firmly on the cultural map once again.
