In a landmark decision this week, Hertsmere Borough Council’s Cabinet unanimously approved the sale of a central site currently occupied by the Borehamwood Islamic Society, paving the way for an exciting redevelopment project comprising Borehamwood’s first permanent mosque and a state of the art new community centre.
This approval marks the fulfilment of a long-held aspiration for the society, which has been working towards creating a new, purpose-built place of worship and community centre to better serve its growing congregation and the wider community.
Local councillors, alongside Brother Amir Choudhury and his leadership team at Borehamwood Islamic Society, have collaborated closely over the past two years to bring this vision to life. Their joint efforts reflect Hertsmere Labour’s commitment to fostering inclusive spaces that enrich the borough’s cultural and social fabric.
Cllr Jeremy Newmark, Leader of Hertsmere Borough Council who has been a leading supporter of the project, commented:
“We are delighted to have played our part in helping Borehamwood Islamic Society reach this milestone. This new mosque and community centre will not only serve as a spiritual home but also as a hub for community engagement, reflecting the rich diversity that makes Hertsmere so special. The new facility will be a cornerstone of community life, hosting events, fostering interfaith engagement and providing vital welfare and support services. We extend our heartfelt congratulations and say ‘Mabrook’ to our friends at the Borehamwood Islamic Society. I am sure they will go from strength to strength in their new home which will rightly become a focal point along the Elstree Way corridor.”
