When Labour took control of Hertsmere in 2023, we inherited the legacy of 24 years of Conservative administration that left residents facing high taxes, declining services and an economy that was not reaching its full potential.
We made a clear promise: to reverse the Conservatives’ record of high tax and low growth, support local businesses, attract investment and create the conditions for a stronger local economy.
The latest figures show that promise is being delivered.
New analysis based on Office for National Statistics data has named Hertsmere as the UK’s top new business hotspot outside London, with more new businesses being created here than anywhere else in the country beyond the capital.
This recognition is not an accident. It is the result of a Labour-led administration that understands economic growth doesn’t just happen by itself. It comes from creating the right environment for businesses to invest, expand and succeed.
Since taking office, Labour has focused on supporting economic development, strengthening partnerships with local businesses, investing in our town centres, backing the creative industries, delivering major infrastructure projects and ensuring Hertsmere remains one of the best places in Britain to start and grow a business.
From the continued expansion of our film and television sector around Elstree, to investment in skills, regeneration and innovation, we are building an economy that works for local people and local businesses alike.
The result is clear. More businesses choosing Hertsmere means more jobs, more opportunities, more investment and a stronger local economy for everyone.
This latest achievement joins a growing body of evidence that Labour’s plan for Hertsmere is working. While others focus on negativity and political point-scoring, we remain focused on delivering real results for residents.
Cllr Jeremy Newmark, Leader of Hertsmere Borough Council, said:
“When Labour took control of Hertsmere, we pledged to deliver serious economic growth. These latest figures stand as clear evidence that our policies are doing just that.
This is a huge vote of confidence in Hertsmere. It reflects our work to support enterprise, investment and job creation across the borough.
We’re determined to build even further upon this success and ensure that this growth continues to benefit communities right across Hertsmere and contribute to the national growth mission.”
Cllr Christian Gray, Cabinet Member for Economic Development, said:
“A thriving local economy doesn’t happen by chance. It requires leadership, ambition and a willingness to work with businesses and investors to create the right conditions for growth.
These figures show that Hertsmere is moving in the right direction. More businesses are choosing to locate here because they recognise the opportunities our borough offers, and that means more jobs, greater prosperity and stronger communities for local residents.
This is exactly the kind of progress Labour promised when we took office, and we’re proud to be delivering it.”
