This evening at Hertsmere Borough Council, a historic decision was taken allowing the former BBC Elstree Studios to thrive for another century. Originally built over 100 years ago in 1914 the site became the home of BBC EastEnders 40 years ago this year.

This will enable a huge investment in the site and will see Oxygen Studios (in partnership with AXA) expand and redevelop the location into a modern film and TV complex. Allowing for a new era in the rich film heritage of Hertsmere, Fairbanks Studios joins the world-famous council owned Elstree Film Studios and SKY Studios Elstree.

Cllr Jeremy Newmark, Leader of Hertsmere Borough Council and Chair of Elstree Film Studios welcomed this approval saying:

“This is fantastic news for the continuing growth of Hertsmere’s creative sector. It’s a huge boost for our local economy that will bring new jobs to the area. On taking up the leadership of the council we committed to bringing a new wave of growth to this sector that underpins our local economy. With this significant development, the recent deal between Elstree Film Studios and MBS Global and the continued growth of SKY Elstree we are seeing this vision come to life. The sector continues to go from strength to strength around here – playing a key role in the government’s national growth mission.”

Speaking following the approval Cllr Nik Oakley, Planning Cabinet Member said

“I am delighted that the planning committee have approved this scheme. These studios offer 21st century facilities that will only enhance our reputation as a town and Borough built on film and TV. The nod to art deco reflects the heritage of the site.”
