£104m Boost for Local Transport
£104m Boost for Local Transport

Local transport in Hertfordshire could soon receive a significant uplift thanks to a government-led investment in the newly established Local Transport Grant (LTG). Across 2026–27 to 2028–29, councils outside England’s urban centres will share £104 million in resource funding, supporting smaller towns and rural communities to deliver greener, safer, and more reliable travel solutions.

This funding is part of a broader £2.3 billion commitment under the government’s Plan for Change, which combines capital and resource allocations to empower local authorities to improve transport infrastructure and services. GOV.UKrouteone

What This Means for Hertfordshire

  • Local control, local impact: Hertfordshire will be able to shape investments—whether it’s zero-emission buses, enhanced pedestrian crossings, or safer cycling routes—tailored to the priorities of its residents. GOV.UK
  • Smarter transport development: The resource funding strengthens Hertfordhsire’s capacity to plan and manage capital projects effectively, ensuring timely and accountable delivery.

A Local Perspective

Cllr Nik Oakley, Cabinet Member for Transport at Hertsmere Borough Council, shared her enthusiasm for the opportunity:

“We have always had great ambitions for transport in Hertsmere and this will allow us to continue our direction of travel with our zero emission hopper buses and increased bus links between our settlements. We have already proved our skill with the delivery of the 84B between Potters Bar and Barnet and our contributions to the Transport for Hertfordshire steering group.”

Government Endorsement

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander emphasised the importance of local action:

“Good transport connections are the foundation of thriving communities… By putting resources directly into the hands of local leaders, we’re ensuring every part of the country benefits from better transport links that support economic growth… all part of our Plan for Change.”
