Elstree Studios, the iconic home of British film and television, is set to enter a bold new chapter — thanks to the leadership of Hertsmere Borough Council’s Labour-led administration.

As Elstree Studios celebrates its 100th anniversary, the Council has announced a landmark partnership between the studios and The MBS Group, the world’s largest studio operator. The deal will safeguard Elstree’s rich heritage while investing in its future — putting Hertsmere back at the forefront of the UK’s booming screen industries.

This transformative agreement is the culmination of months of work by the new Labour-led partnership that took control of Hertsmere Borough Council in 2023 after decades of Conservative rule.

The partnership has been spearheaded by Councillor Jeremy Newmark, Leader of the Council and Chair of the Board at Elstree Studios. Under his leadership, the Council has taken decisive steps to modernise the studio’s operations, attract investment, and build stronger links between the creative sector and our local economy.

“Elstree Studios is where Britain’s Hollywood story began – and now it’s where its future is being written,” said Cllr Newmark. “This partnership with The MBS Group ensures that Elstree remains not only a cultural landmark but a driver of economic opportunity and civic pride for generations to come.”

The announcement follows a visit by His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh to mark the studio’s centenary and came alongside the launch of a programme of events to celebrate Elstree’s global legacy.

Turning the Page on Years of Neglect

Under the previous Conservative administration, the studios were plagued by underinvestment and a lack of strategic direction. The Board was exclusively Conservative for years, with no diversity of political or creative vision.

That has now changed.

Since taking control, the partnership administration has brought fresh energy and ambition to the project. With a new leadership team in place and a clear commitment to Elstree’s future, the Council has delivered what many thought was no longer possible — a secure, sustainable, and world-class future for Elstree Studios.

Investing in our Creative Economy

The deal with The MBS Group brings in a global studio partner with a track record of supporting major productions such as Avatar, The Crown, and Bridgerton. MBS operates more than 50 studio campuses worldwide, including iconic sites in Hollywood, New York, Vancouver, and now – Elstree.

Their expertise and infrastructure will support Elstree’s ongoing role in hosting high-end film and television productions, while also developing the site as a source of local jobs, training and community engagement.

A Proud Moment for Hertsmere

Labour’s leadership of the Council has already delivered major wins for local communities — from restoring public services to securing real investment in our towns. But the Elstree Studios announcement is something truly historic.

“For the first time in decades, we have a Council leadership that sees the value of Elstree not just as a brand, but as a community asset. We are proud of our history, ambitious about our future, and serious about delivering for local residents,” said a Hertsmere Labour spokesperson.

This is the kind of bold, visionary leadership Hertsmere deserves. And it’s only possible with a Labour-led council.
