More than half a million children across the country are set to benefit from an historic expansion of free school meals under the new Labour government – easing the cost of living and giving every child the best start in life.
In a bold move to support working families, Prime Minister Keir Starmer has confirmed the rollout of free school meals to an additional 500,000 children – a policy that will save parents up to £500 per child per year and lift around 100,000 children out of poverty.
This action is a major early milestone for the new Labour government and a clear sign that change has begun.
As the cost of living continues to weigh heavily on many households in Hertsmere, the announcement brings welcome relief – ensuring that children are not only well-fed but also better equipped to learn, thrive and succeed. The expansion of free school meals has been proven to improve attendance, attainment, behaviour, and wellbeing across the board.
“This is a huge win for working families in Hertsmere. It’s the kind of real, practical support that parents tell us they need – and Labour is delivering it. No child should be held back by hunger or the stress of poverty. By easing financial pressure on parents and ensuring more children are well-fed and ready to learn, we’re investing in our young people and our communities. This is the difference a Labour government makes.”
