Earlier this week, Leader of the Council, Cllr Jeremy Newmark (Borehamwood Cowley Hill Ward) met with Borehamwood residents to outline and seek input on plans to develop the disused Reg Harwood Pavilion in Borehamwood’s Aycliffe Park.  Together with fellow ward Councillor, Linda Smith, Cllr Newmark held a series of talks with local community groups and residents who will be centrally involved in shaping this new piece of community provision.

The now derelict pavilion will be repurposed into a modern, multi-function community space in order to address what the councillors described as a “deficit in community facilities” in this part of Borehamwood which scores high on the national indices of multiple deprivation.  After Council officers outlined the history and potential of the site, Councillors led discussions on exactly what the new facility might look like, how it might function and which community groups may operate from the centre.  They stressed that the existing playing fields and green space will not be affected.

This exciting project has huge potential for the local community and is the latest stage in the Council’s programme of major investment in parks around the borough.

Speaking after the meeting, Cllr Jeremy Newmark, Cllr Linda Smith & Cllr Richard Butler said:

“We are thrilled to be launching this project and delighted with the strong turnout of local people and community groups.  A central plank of our pledge to voters at the 2023 local elections was to bring new investment to this part of the local community which often missed out under the previous Conservative leadership.  This is another step in delivering on that promise.  At a time when many councils are having to cut back and sell off community provision it is wonderful to be able to work with local residents and community groups to co-design and produce a modern community-centred building that will provide opportunities for young people, the elderly and the entire community.  We encourage people to engage with the ongoing public consultation and let us have your views on what you would like to see in the new centre.”
