Hertsmere Labour Party Hertsmere Constituency Labour Party & Hertsmere Borough Council Labour & Co-operative Group

Hertsmere Labour is delivering on its promise to create a fairer, more prosperous, and sustainable borough. Following the Government’s changes to national planning policy, we are taking decisive action to ensure our Local Plan delivers the homes, jobs, and infrastructure our communities need—while protecting as much of our Green Belt as possible.
The updated National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) has increased Hertsmere’s housing target from 13,000 to over 18,500 homes over the next 18 years. Rather than simply accepting top-down diktats, Hertsmere Labour is rising to the challenge by prioritising regeneration and investment in Borehamwood and Potters Bar, ensuring that development benefits our communities, not just developers.
We are putting local people first. That’s why our approach focuses on optimising brownfield and grey belt land, safeguarding our much-loved green spaces while creating thriving, sustainable neighbourhoods. We are committed to providing genuinely affordable and social housing so that local families, young people, and key workers can continue to live and work in Hertsmere.
Last year’s consultation on the Draft Local Plan gave us valuable insights from residents, and we will continue to listen. In the coming months, we will set out a clear timeline for the next phase of consultation, ensuring that local voices shape the future of our borough.
Cllr Jeremy Newmark, Leader of the Council, said:
“This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to revitalise our borough and drive economic growth. Our ambitious regeneration plans for Borehamwood and Potters Bar will bring new jobs, investment, and high-quality infrastructure, creating vibrant town centres that work for everyone. We’re determined to get this right and to make sure that development is led by the needs of our communities.”
Cllr Nik Oakley, Portfolio Holder for Planning, Infrastructure, and Transport, added:
“We are focused on delivering the right homes in the right places, ensuring that Hertsmere remains a fantastic place to live, work, and visit. Our commitment to sustainable, community-led development is unwavering. We are protecting as much of our Green Belt as possible while making sure we build not just houses, but real communities.”
Hertsmere Labour is committed to open, transparent, and meaningful engagement with residents as we refine our Local Plan. We encourage everyone to stay involved, have their say, and help shape a fairer, greener, and more prosperous Hertsmere for generations to come.
