NHS Motion Passed

Labour Councillors, Aaditya Kaza and Renos Georgiou tabled a motion to encourage all parties at Hertsmere Borough Council to pledge to work with the NHS to bring down NHS Waiting Lists. The call comes as the Government sets out its plan to end waiting list backlogs through millions of additional appointments.

The plans will mean:

·      Up to half a million more appointments made available each year thanks to greater access to Community Diagnostic Centres and new or expanded surgical hubs

·      Greater patient choice over follow-up care as part of a drive to open-up one million appointments, alongside better use of tech and other action to save another million missed appointments

·      Tackling the 7.5million strong waiting list inherited by the government so that the NHS once again meets the 18 week standard for planned treatment is a key milestone in the government’s Plan for Change. Restoring this standard will mean millions of patients no longer have to have their lives put on hold.

There are thousands of patients waiting for care across Hertsmere.

Labour’s Cllr Aaditya Kaza said,

“Here in Hertsmere far too many people are waiting far too long for care – those aren’t just statistics, they are our family, friends and neighbours, lives put on hold, waiting often in real pain or genuine fear. Labour inherited a health crisis, and I am delighted the government is taking action to tackle it.

“But Hertsmere Borough Council has a crucial role to play in this too – that’s why I tabled this motion to the council this week committing to use our resources to work with the NHS to tackle this national mission together. Whilst I was certain this would receive unanimous support, it was sad that the Conservatives chose not to back it. Labour & Liberal Democrat Councillors passed the motion.

“After 14 years of failure, change won’t be easy, but we are a great country, and we will get there. The new Labour Government is turning this country around. Hertsmere Borough Council, in joint Labour/Lib Dem administration, is fighting hard to drive our community forward every single day.”

Change has begun.
