“The May ’23 elections saw very significant change in Hertsmere”

“The Partnership Administration is providing energy and a strong sense of what is important…”

The Labour and Liberal Democrat administration at Hertsmere Borough Council has received a glowing endorsement in its first Local Government Association (LGA) Peer Review Challenge. The report, published with the latest cabinet papers, commends the administration for its ‘remarkable progress’ since taking office in May 2023.

The Peer Review is an independent assessment conducted by experienced local government professionals and leaders, evaluating the council’s financial management, governance, and performance. The findings highlight the transformative changes achieved by the administration over the past 20 months.

Leader of the Council, Labour’s Cllr Jeremy Newmark, welcomed the report, saying:

“This independent external assessment and report based on financial, performance, and governance information is a resounding endorsement of our administration’s success in transforming this council over the past 20 months. There remains much to be done to deliver the growth required after two and a half decades of Tory leadership – but it’s great to have this early independent endorsement of our success so far.”

Since taking office, the administration has prioritised transparency, community engagement, and sustainable growth. Initiatives such as enhanced neighbourhood services, improved support for vulnerable residents, and a commitment to addressing the housing crisis have been key to the council’s success.

The Peer Review team noted significant improvements in the council’s strategic planning and its ability to work collaboratively with partners and the local community. The report also praised the administration’s focus on innovation and financial resilience.  The report welcomed the new adminstration’s increased focus on economic development.

Deputy Leader of Hertsmere’s Labour Group, Cllr Chris Gray added:

“This report reflects the hard work of Councillors and officers who are committed to making Hertsmere a better place for everyone. It’s a testament to what we can achieve when we put residents at the heart of everything we do.”

The administration’s forward-looking approach aims to build on this success, addressing challenges such as housing, infrastructure, and climate change. Residents can expect further progress as the council continues to implement its ambitious plans for the borough.

This recognition from the LGA marks a proud moment for Hertsmere, affirming the positive change brought by its political leadership.
