Get Britain Working
Get Britain Working

The Labour Government has launched its ambitious Get Britain Working white paper, setting out a bold vision to tackle economic inactivity, unlock potential, and grow the economy. The white paper represents a commitment to providing opportunities for all – and Hertsmere will benefit from these transformative plans.

Key elements of the plan include transforming Jobcentres into a public employment service, ensuring every 18–21-year-old is earning or learning, and providing new back-to-work support tailored to local needs.

The white paper will deliver £115 million of funding across England and Wales next year as part of the Connect to Workscheme. This funding will support local councils, like Hertsmere, to develop tailored Get Britain Working plans. While this is a national funding pot, Hertsmere will receive resources to help residents overcome barriers to employment and access opportunities.

Cllr Jeremy Newmark, Labour Leader of Hertsmere Borough Council, welcomed the initiative:

“This is a game changer for our community. Hertsmere’s local economy has enormous untapped potential, and these measures will enable us to address barriers to work, particularly for young people and those with health challenges. Labour is demonstrating what government looks like when it’s focused on fairness, opportunity, and growth. It’s time to get Britain – and Hertsmere – working again.”

The Connect to Work scheme will offer voluntary supported employment to people with disabilities, health conditions, or complex barriers to work, supporting up to 100,000 people annually at full rollout. Additionally, the Youth Guarantee will ensure every young person is in education, training, or employment, giving them the tools to succeed and contribute to society.

As Labour Councillors, we are committed to ensuring Hertsmere’s allocation of this funding directly benefits our residents, fostering a brighter and more inclusive future for all.

This is the transformative leadership that Hertsmere deserves – and it’s just the beginning. Stay tuned as we share how these opportunities are being delivered right here in our borough.

Together, let’s Get Britain Working.
