New analysis from Hertsmere Labour reveals the staggering rise in homelessness under the last Government. Three hundred and fifty-one families were assessed as homeless 5 years ago. However, following a devastating parliament for living standards – the worst in British history – that figure has risen to 597 up by 70.1%.
The figures come as the new Labour Government sets out to fix the foundations with an overhaul of the planning system that will help Britain build the homes we need – 1.5million across the parliament.
Publishing the analysis, Labour’s Cllr Nik Oakley, Hertsmere Borough Council’s Portfolio Holder for Planning said,
“The Conservatives left Britain broke and broken, but Labour has a plan to fix the foundations and get this country back on its feet and thriving again.
“Over 14 years the Tories systematically failed to build the homes we need, and that has pushed up homelessness and the costs of housing. It is a disgrace that 597 families in Hertsmere haven’t got a home. That means disruption and worry for them, and higher costs for local council taxpayers.
“Labour is taking action here in Hertsmere. We are working closely with local developers to deliver the maximum number of social and affordable homes as possible to get Britain building the right kinds of homes so local families can afford to live in decent homes in the areas, they want to live in.”
