Tory tantrums

At tonight’s Hertsmere Borough Council meeting, residents’ concerns took centre stage, but the Tory opposition seemed more interested in theatrics than progress. Astonishingly, they voted against road safety measures and attempted to block a tree strategy supported by the National Woodland and Tree Trust.

Despite their antics, we pressed on with important council business, including a motion on the Winter Fuel Allowance brought forward by the opposition. After a thorough debate, Deputy Leader of the Labour Group, Cllr Chris Gray, gave a powerful speech, highlighting the council’s real efforts to support local people. Cllr Gray pointed out that the Conservative motion was nothing more than empty “dog-whistle politics” and that real solutions would come from Hertsmere’s cabinet, where practical help for residents could be implemented.

Following the meeting, Cllr Gray commented, “The council sensibly voted to send the motion to the Leader of the Cabinet to enable the Cabinet to work on this policy which infuriated the Conservatives. If they were serious about helping pensioners, that’s where they would have directed it from the start. Instead, they’ve used the elderly as political pawns.”

In an extraordinary display of pettiness, the majority of the Tory opposition stormed out of the chamber when they didn’t get their way. “I’ve never seen anything like it,” Cllr Gray remarked. “It was like watching children throw a tantrum.”

One Tory councillor, Cllr Sarah Hodgson-Jones, refused to join her colleagues in this immature stunt and remained to engage in the meeting – the lone opposition voice behaving responsibly.
