After years of uncertainty over the ancient oak trees’ of Ely Gardens, we are incredibly excited to reveal that the remaining tree has now been saved.

In a passionate speech by leader of Hertsmere Borough Council, Jeremy Newmark, the Borehamwood Councillor said ‘a couple of weeks ago I was told by officers, at very short notice about plans to fell the tree, further to a possible subsidence claim from insurers with an interest in a nearby property. I was fully cognizant of the distress caused by the felling of the adjacent tree under the previous administration”

He continued “I’m really pleased to be able to reassure residents this evening that combined with a realistic and fair attitude to risk, this report has enabled us to cancel the felling of that tree.”

Elstree & Borehamwood Town Councillor in Kenilworth, Dan Ozarow, has worked closely with collegues and residents to ensure that this outcome was possible.

Speaking on the matter, Ozarow commented “Residents on Ely Gardens and surrounding streets who were at the forefront of the previous campaign to save their beloved ancient Oak have told me how much this decision means to them and the community.”

He continued “This majestic tree has come to symbolise a much wider battle to save our green spaces and nature that is going on across our town and borough at the moment. So today we celebrate that local children can enjoy its beauty as much as we do.”
