HERTSMERE LABOUR SECURE ULEZ EXEMPTIONS

Transport for London’s new map of the proposed Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) expansion reflects a huge success for Hertsmere residents and businesses.

Following talks initiated by Hertsmere Labour with the Deputy Mayor of London and Vice-Chair of Transport for London (TfL) a number of charge exempt ‘corridor’ roads have been created. This means that Hertsmere residents with non-compliant vehicles who have no other exemption will not have to pay when visiting important sites such as Barnet Hospital, the A5 from Elstree and Bushey to Stanmore and Edgware and Edgware Way (A41).

Whilst only an estimated 15% of vehicles in Hertsmere are currently non-compliant with the emissions standards required to avoid the charge when entering London (and many of these are exempt on other grounds), Hertsmere Labour has listened to residents concerns and taken action to help them.

Cllr Jeremy Newmark, Leader of Hertsmere Labour Group who arranged and led talks with Deputy London Mayor, Seb Dance said:

“The Tories have done nothing but print leaflets, scare residents and politicise the issue.  I am proud that Labour acted and achieved a genuine win for the benefit of local people.  I thank Hertsmere Liberal Democrats and the single independently minded Conservative Councillor who supported our efforts.”

Meanwhile it was revealed that the Mayor’s Office had written to Hertsmere Borough Council Leader Morris Bright over a month ago requesting a meeting to discuss how ULEZ expansion may affect people in Hertsmere, but at last Wednesday’s council meeting he admitted that he hadn’t even read their letter, or replied.
