A loud and clear message has gone out to the people of Hertsmere that the country needs a New Green Deal.
Speaking to members of Hertsmere Labour Party at the Royal British Legion, Clive Lewis MP, Shadow Treasury Minister, is one of the backers of a new bill designed to move our economy away from its harmful dependence on carbon, at the scale and speed demanded by climate change and to build a society that lives within its ecological limits while reversing social and economic inequality.
He told the audience that the New Green Deal can’t just be about “tinkering” and instead called for “emergency socialism”, which he described as a “whole new political economy”.
With Brexit and a General Election high on the political agenda, he was not going to escape questions from the audience on his thoughts, telling them that Labour can build its vote, even in the Conservative stronghold of Hertsmere.
Clive is Labour MP for Norwich South but before entering Parliament he was Vice President of the National Union of Students, a BBC TV political reporter as well as an Army reservist infantry officer, serving a combat tour of Afghanistan.
He has been Shadow Minister for Climate & Energy Change, Shadow Secretary of State for Defence and Shadow Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy. His current current portfolio focuses on environmental economics and sustainable finance.
Supporting speakers included Holly Kal-Weiss, Chipping Barnet Labour’s Campaign Officer, and local Hertsmere Councillor, Michelle Vince.
Said Hertsmere Labour Chair, Dr Dan Ozarow: “Clive Lewis is a fantastic speaker and a real champion for climate change and we were delighted that he came to speak to us. Given his connection to the armed forces, the Royal British Legion was a very fitting venue.”
