Hertsmere Labour’s latest analysis shows a 394% increase in publicly available electric vehicle (EV) charging pointsacross the borough since the General Election, a surge driven by collaboration between the Labour Government and Hertsmere Borough Council.

Across the country, more than 20,000 extra charging points have gone live since July 2024, demonstrating the impact of a national strategy backed by local delivery.

Nationally, the Government is supporting drivers to switch to electric with:

  • £650m Electric Car Grant, lowering the price of 39 EV models

  • £385m Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Fund, supporting the rollout of 100,000 new charging points

  • £25m to councils to accelerate local charging infrastructure

Hertsmere: delivering new local infrastructure

Here in Hertsmere, the council has begun a major rollout of public charging infrastructure, making it easier for residents to charge close to home, especially those without driveways.

Phase One is now complete, with new public charging points installed in council car parks and leisure centre sites across Borehamwood, Bushey, Potters Bar, Radlett and Shenley.

Nine new charging locations live
At least 74 chargers in total being delivered
Straightforward payment: contactless, phone, app or RFID card
Introductory lower-cost rate available at launch

This is the biggest single expansion of publicly accessible EV charging infrastructure Hertsmere has ever seen.

Publishing the analysis, Cllr Renos Georgiou, Labour Cabinet Member Labour at HBC said:

“More families and businesses in Hertsmere are choosing electric and we are making that decision easier and cheaper.

Here in Hertsmere we are delivering at least 74 new charging points in our car parks and leisure centres, including in Potters Bar, Bushey, and Borehamwood. These chargers give every resident, especially those without a driveway, a real alternative.

Since the General Election, local charging points are up 394%. Charging has never been easier, and making the switch has never been more straightforward. That’s good for local people and good for British jobs in our fast-growing EV industry.”

Building a greener future

Greater, better and more convenient access to charging:

  • makes EVs more practical for everyday drivers

  • supports British manufacturing and a fast-growing green economy

  • improves local air quality on our route to Net Zero

The UK now ranks #1 in Europe’s EV market, with sales up nearly a third this year.

Hertsmere Labour Cabinet members say this will only accelerate.

“This is what happens when national ambition meets local action.”
